Patratu Dam stands as one of the most attractive tourist spot with a history rooted in both industrial development and local identity. Built on the Nalkari River, the dam was originally constructed to store water for the Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS) and to support nearby areas. Over time, it has grown from a practical water resource into a symbol of the region’s heritage and natural beauty.




The historic setup of Patratu Dam reflects the need for planned infrastructure during a period of industrial growth. The dam site was chosen after surveys identified the river basin and surrounding hills as suitable for water storage, and its development is linked to the engineering vision associated with Sir M. Visvesvaraya. In the 1960s, the dam became especially significant as the Patratu Thermal Power Station expanded and required a dependable water supply. This made Patratu Dam an essential part of the region’s industrial backbone.

Patratu Railway Station (PTRU)

 

Patratu Railway Station (PTRU) is a vital transport junction serving an infrastructure layout of three platforms interconnected by a foot-over bridge. Beyond its role as a commercial transit station, Patratu Station is a primary transit point for travellers visiting the picturesque Patratu Valley and the Patratu Dam.



 

It is natively equipped with foundational passenger amenities such as active ticketing counters, sheltered passenger seating, and basic resting stalls. It experiences an average daily traffic of roughly 30 halting and passing trains, handling prominent regional linkages like the Palamu Express and Ranchi-Chopan Express. Because of its proximity to major freight corridors, the station tracks regularly host goods trains servicing local coal mines and industrial plants, including the prominent Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS). 


Functioning under the jurisdiction of the Dhanbad Division within the East Central Railway (ECR) zone, the station acts as an essential gateway for passengers and massive freight movement. Situated at a comfortable elevation of 372 metres above sea level on Station Road, it provides structural connectivity to the surrounding mineral-rich industrial belts and scenic tourist hotspots.


State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) marks a bold commitment to cleaner ecosystems in Patratu

    

Patratu, an industrial hub in India, is undergoing a remarkable transformation through proactive environmental governance. The closure of factories like Sai Electric, Durga Engineering, Tirumala Industries, Kumar Engineering, Birsa Enterprises, Bricks Factory, Electricity Pole Factory, Grease Factory, and Aditya Factory by the State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) marks a bold commitment to cleaner ecosystems. This action safeguards rivers such as Nalkari and Damodar from industrial effluents, setting a foundation for sustainable growth.





Responding swiftly to community concerns, JSPCB enforced closures due to violations of No Objection Certificate (NOC) norms and pollution discharge into vital waterways. Previously burdened by legacy emissions from the Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS), the area now benefits from reduced contaminants, improving air and water quality. This initiative aligns with national environmental standards, fostering healthier living conditions and serving as a model for responsible industrial regulation.



The government is channeling this momentum into exciting prospects. New projects, including PVUNL’s 4000 MW supercritical power plant and UltraTech Cement’s Patratu unit, emphasize green technologies like fly ash recycling, continuous emission monitoring, and greenbelt development covering 33% of areas. These advancements minimize dust and emissions through bag filters, covered silos, and pneumatic transport, creating thousands of skilled jobs while prioritizing eco-compliance. Former workers stand to gain from training programs tailored for modern industries.

Siberian Migratory Birds at Patratu Dam

 

Patratu Dam has once again become a colourful centre of bird life now that, with the advent of winter, hundreds of migrant birds—or as they are commonly known, Siberian birds—have started arriving at the scenic water body. Their influx, which normally occurs during the period of November and February, has added to the natural beauty of the dam and attracted nature lovers, bird watchers, and tourists all over the region.





Each year, these winged tourists cover thousands of kilometres to fly out of cold regions like Siberia, Central Asia, and Northern Europe, where severe winter conditions exist. The calm waters, favourable weather, and food quantities at Patratu Dam have made it the best stopover and wintering place for these migratory species. They not only provide a visual feast but also an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.


Several species of waterfowl, such as geese, ducks, coots, and pochards, have already been reported by visitors.
